Balatro is a roguelike game designed around poker rules, where players need to create powerful hands to win chips and move through each round called Blinds. You battle for ever-higher points rather than against other players, which forces you to maximize each turn within a constrained number of hands and folds.

Poker-Based Method of Scoring

The basis of the game is familiar poker hand combinations such as Pair, Two Pair, Straight, Flush, Full House, or Four of a Kind. However, Balatro goes beyond standard poker. Each hand is scored based on its base value mixed with a multiplier, and this multiplier can be increased, modified, or completely manipulated thanks to the Joker system—the aspect that makes the game so insane.

Balatro's Joker System

The game boasts over 150 different Jokers, each with a unique effect: increasing the multiplier when face cards aren't used, adding chips to each remaining card in the deck, rewarding money when discarding, boosting the power of a specific card type… The order in which Jokers are put also influences how the effects activate, offering substantial strategic depth. Every decision is a long-term strategic move because players can only carry a certain number of Jokers.

Tarot, Planet, and Deck Upgrade Tools

Besides Jokers, Balatro also offers consumable cards like Tarot, Planet, and Spectral cards that allow for permanent deck upgrades, suit changes, turning cards into gold to earn money, or leveling up hands like Straight or Three of a Kind. There are additional options to personalize your deck thanks to the shop's Voucher and Booster Pack system after every round.

Roguelike Elements

Because it's roguelike, each playthrough is an entirely new journey. You can design a flush-oriented deck with all Hearts, focus on big multipliers by avoiding face cards, or develop a strategy built around spamming discards and earning interest. But just one Boss Blind with an adverse effect, like deactivating a suit, weakening diamonds, or forcing face-down cards… can undo all your efforts.
