Fireboy & Watergirl 7 is a cooperative puzzle game where you control two (or more) characters navigating trap-filled temples. If you've played the previous versions, you'll find everything familiar, fire goes its own way, water goes its own way but this version starts to go a bit overboard, requiring more strategic thinking than just quick reflexes.

How to Play Fireboy & Watergirl 7

Control multiple characters simultaneously

You can play alone (controlling all characters yourself) or with friends. Each character has their own limitations:

  • Fireboy cannot touch water
  • Watergirl cannot pass through lava
  • Both will disappear if they fall into the blue liquid

It sounds simple, but with the addition of new characters, you'll have to divide your attention, which can be confusing if you're not used to it.

Cooperate to clear a path

Most of the gameplay revolves around flipping switches, pulling levers, or holding positions to clear paths for other characters. Sometimes you have to sacrifice one character's movement just to hold the door open for the other to continue.

Utilize each character's unique abilities

Fireboy & Watergirl 7 adds several new teammates, each capable of a different task:

  • Some squeeze through small gaps
  • Some are heavy enough to hold the button
  • Some move more nimbly than usual

The game requires you to use the right person at the right time; you can't just do whatever you want.

Complete levels and collect diamonds

Each level has its own diamonds for each character. Reaching the finish line is easy, but if you want to collect all the diamonds, you have to be quite careful, sometimes even taking detours.

Some tips for playing Fireboy & Watergirl 7

  • Don't try to do everything at once: Break it down into smaller steps, dealing with each character individually.
  • Clear the way first: Take a look at the whole level and determine who goes first so you don't have to start over.
  • If you can play with two people, do it, it’s a lot less confusing than solo.

Fireboy & Watergirl 7 doesn't add a lot, but it knows how to make the old game a little harder in a good sense, meaning you'll have to think more and coordinate better. That feel of joyful, cooperative gameplay is still there. Simple, but not easy. If you want something a little more fast-paced, with less waiting around and more of an emphasis on reflexes, then Track Dash is a good alternative to try afterwards.
