Town of Salem is a social deduction game where you lose not because of a lack of information, but because you say the wrong thing at the wrong time. In Classic mode, things are much more chaotic than in the advanced modes. This section is where newcomers learn the game, but it's also where experienced players can manipulate the entire room if they know when to speak and when to remain silent.

How to play Town of Salem

The game revolves around:

  • At night: secret roles act (kill, investigate, protect, set traps).
  • During the day, the entire town argues, accuses, and hangs suspected people.
  • It sounds simple, but being accused early can lead to being watched and scrutinized throughout the game—whether you're right or wrong.

Actual gameplay experience

Players are prone to tunnel vision (obsession with a single suspect). An initial false accusation can ruin the entire game. And sometimes silence is safer than saying the truth.

A prime example is the Framer role: Don't claim the Doctor (it's a breeze to be mistaken for a Serial Killer). Claiming the Sheriff is better, but you must not post your will too early. Framing the wrong person early in the game can result in the town members turning against each other.

In Classic, correct information doesn't guarantee victory. Winning often comes from having two people accuse the same target, making the Jailer believe that many people see it the same way. Additionally, the Jailer often exploits the town's belief in the majority over logic.

Most common beginner mistakes

  • Accusing too early
  • Posting before anyone asks
  • The goal is to explain the situation accurately rather than merely getting through the day

Misinformation and haste cause the town to shoot itself in the foot, leading to many game losses.

Why is Classic still worth playing?

Despite being considered a mode for noobs, Classic is where:

  • Common thinking errors are easily observed.
  • Learn to read player behavior, not just roles.
  • And practice the most important skill in the game: knowing when to speak and when to feign ignorance.

Town of Salem doesn't reward the smartest player; it rewards those who know how to let others make mistakes for them. And if you enjoy other exciting gaming experiences, you can also play Flying Ball to enjoy the high-speed experience of flying through the galaxy.
